FTC Warns Apple Over Potential Political Bias in News App
The Federal Trade Commission has issued a formal warning to Apple regarding allegations of political bias in its news aggregation service. FTC Commissioner Andrew Ferguson, appointed during the Trump administration, contends the tech giant may be violating consumer protection laws by curating content without proper disclosure.
Section 5 of the FTC Act prohibits deceptive practices that mislead consumers. Ferguson's letter emphasizes that while Apple enjoys First Amendment protections, algorithmic manipulation of news feeds could constitute unlawful omission if users expect neutrality. The commissioner stopped short of accusing Apple of wrongdoing but demanded immediate review of its content moderation policies.
This regulatory scrutiny follows a Media Research Center study analyzing Apple News' January content distribution. The findings allegedly demonstrate systematic favoritism in article selection and promotion. Apple now faces mounting pressure to either substantiate its editorial neutrality or implement transparent disclosure mechanisms.
